BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Some of Baton Rouge’s most overpopulated animal shelters gathered at Companion Animal Alliance to make sure that someone went home with a furry friend.

Clear the Shelters, held every August, is a nationwide pet adoption campaign. In Baton Rouge, animal shelter organizers gave people the opportunity to see if these fur babies could be forever friends.

“They’re always there for you, they can be your best friend, they’re there when you need them. You need a hug to come home after a long day,” said Sherly Mohler, a volunteer for Rescue Alliance Animal Service.

Lots of people who attended the event were first-time pet owners, but with the option to foster, they’ll be able to ensure each pet is the right fit. Like Jameela Rod, who came alone and left with a new friend.

“I literally just met him like 10 minutes ago and I’ve been told he’s friendly and had all shots you know up to date health-wise,” said Rod.

The fostering option will allow people to take a pet home for a couple of days to ensure the animal is able to adapt to the new environment. It’s a tricky process because once you grow to love a pet, you’ll want to adopt.

Clear the Shelters went on from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, but organizers said you can easily become a pet owner with one call or a visit. Learn more here.
